S: Things fall apart
FC: Okonkwo's Experience
Okonkwo is very stern and masculine.he has a son namedNyowe who is not as strong and manly as he wantshim to be.He has a lot of kids and three wifes .His daughter Enzima tries to please him, although she is his favorite child he doesn't allow her to do certain things because she is a girl. He is a tragic hero in his superior character however his tragic flaw is that his masculinity is acted through anger and violence that bring him down.
Okonkwo has many kids and wifes. He also has a huge fear of acting like his dead father. His goal in life is to be the opposite of him. | Okonkwo causes lots of emotions between others and also kills many people because he is trying so hard to be masculine and strong. | He is exiled to Mabanta for seven years with his family for an accidental gun shot that killed a young boy.
He meets new people and learns about what they are suffering through as well such as Uchenda. | Okonwo has now served his time and he goes back to his hometown. He then realizes that the Ibo culture is not the same and never will be. He then hangs himself.
"No matter how prosperous a man was, if he was unable to rule his women and his children(and especially his women)he was not really a man." (Achebe 45 and 46) | "Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wifes, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his firey temper, and so did his little children." (Achebe 10) | Quotes
"I will not have a son who cannot hold up his head in the gathering of the clan. i would sooner strangle him with my own hands" (Achebe 28) | "At the most one could say that his chi or personal god was good. But the Ibopeople have a proverb that when a man sys yes his chi sys yes also. Okonkwo said yes very strongly; and so his chi agreeded." (Achebe 23) | "Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness." (Achebe 10)
" Living fire begets cold, impotent ash." (Achebe 134)-(I think that this means that if someone has too much power, things next to it won't have enough room to grow properly.Because of Okonwo's greatness his son could not become great) | "An old woman is always uneasy when dry bones are mentioned in a proverb.(Achebe 11)-( I think this means when someone who has a problem with something like Okonkwo and his father, they can not laugh when a joke is made about it.
Themes | Some themes related to Okonkwo would be respect and masculinity. He was always wanting other peoples approval of him. Also he was always trying to make himself feel secure.
Literary Terms | "Old men nodded to the beat of the drums and remembered... it's intoxicating rhythm.(Achebe 41) (Imagery) | "Okonwo was popularly called the"roaring flame."As he looked into the log fire he recalled the name.He was a flaming fire." (Achebe 133) (metaphor)
"The earth burned like hot coals and roasted all the yams that had been sown." (Achebe 19) (Simile) | "Evil forest began to speak and all the while he spoke everyone was silent." (Achebe 82) (personification)
